Holism and Compositionality

چکیده
A brief acquaintance with the web shows that the terms ‘holism’ and ‘compositionality’ are used in many different fields, both academic and non-academic. And given any two academic fields, it is usually not obvious that the terms mean the same to the practitioners. Even just within philosophy and linguistics it seems that rather different conceptions are in play when we read any two different authors. We start, therefore, with a brief survey of some of the senses in which these terms are used. A little later we will make some more careful remarks about the notions.

Semantic Holism in Scientific Language
Whether or not meaning is compositional has been a major issue in linguistics and formal philosophy of language for the last two decades. Semantic holism is widely and plausibly considered as an objection to the principle of semantic compositionality therein. It comes as a surprise that the holistic peculiarities of scientific language have been rarely addressed in formal accounts so far, given...
متن کاملEpistemological holism without linguistic holism
Epistemological holism is usually associated with linguistic holism, and sometimes the latter is inferred from the former. In this chapter I shall show how the view that the sense of a sentence be its immediate argumental role, though it conforms to the requirement of compositionality and hence involves a denial of linguistic holism, is perfectly compatible with epistemological holism. Thus, by...
متن کاملCommercialism, Holism, and Individual Responsibility; Comment on “Buying Health: The Costs of Commercialism and an Alternative Philosophy”
Churchill and Churchill’s editorial discusses negative (health) effects of commercialism in the provision of health care and nutrition. Three parts of their argument are commented: the claim that the fundamental problem of markets is the decomposition of the whole into parts (“reductionism”); the call for individual responsibility; and the notion of holism. On the three aspects the commentary c...
متن کاملSemantic Holism and (Non-)Compositionality in Scientific Theories
It is a well-established view in the Philosophy of Science that scientific theories introduce new terms, so-called theoretical terms. They denote properties, usually functional properties, which go beyond what is observable or given by common sense. Their meaning is not pre-theoretically given. It is specified by nothing else but the theory itself. The same holds for the denotations of theoreti...
متن کاملHolistic Entropy Reduction for Collaborative Filtering
We propose a collaborative filtering (CF) method that uses behavioral data provided as propositions having the RDF-compliant form of (user X , likes, item Y ) triples. The method involves the application of a novel self-configuration technique for the generation of vector-space representations optimized from the information-theoretic perspective. The method, referred to as Holistic Probabilisti...
